Hansard rose to international prominence as the frontman of The Frames and for his starring role in the 2007 musical film Once. Alongside Markéta Irglová, he won the 2008 Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Falling Slowly." He also enjoyed a successful solo career and remained one of Ireland's most celebrated musicians.
The fatal single-vehicle crash occurred in the early hours of Wednesday in Lucan, west of Dublin. Emergency responders attended the scene, but the musician could not be saved.
His death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from across the music industry.
Bruce Springsteen described himself as "heartbroken," saying:
"Always upbeat, smiling, and eager to sing. May God bless him and his loved ones."
Ed Sheeran also paid tribute, writing:
"He was such an incredible human, and an incredible force. I am grateful for the times we shared, sending so much love to his family."
Beyond his music career, Hansard was widely admired for his humanitarian work. He organised an annual Christmas Eve busking event in Dublin that raised funds for homeless people and regularly featured renowned musicians.
He is survived by his family, while fans and colleagues around the world continue to mourn the loss of a celebrated artist whose music and generosity left a lasting impact.
